The Canadain Songbook was hosted by singer-songwriters Kim Stockwood and Damhnait Doyle. It was one of the events of the Luminato Festival. The story of a nation was told in its songs as well as its history books. From the chansonniers of Quebec to such icons as Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, Canadian troubadours won acclaim throughout the world, their distinctive voices helping construct an epic account of a land and its people. In an intimate evening at Massey Hall, critically acclaimed musicians paid homage to this country's greatest songwriters. Festival artists and special guests were accompanied by Luminato's own hand-picked house band.

THE DAUGHTERS OF CYBELE

Written and Directed by Alessandra Belloni
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, NYC

In celebration of Women's History Month, internationally renowned Singer/ Percussionist and Cathedral Artist in Residence, Alessandra Belloni and her new Womens Ensemble, Daughters of Cybele, Women Drummers for World Peace, were joined by guest actress/singer Cynthia Enfield and violinist Susan Aquila.

Countries around the world, including Southern Italy, Brazil, Africa and the Middle East have musical traditions based on the power of women. Belloni and Company will emulate one of the most ancient ways of praying and healing, including sacred chanting to the Black Madonna sung by female voices in harmony, accompanied by various percussion instruments (frame drums, tambourines, shakers, djembes, ballaphones, dumbecks, riqqs, mazhars, and marimbas.) Dancers will spin and stomp their feet in celebration of life and peace with the healing trance dance of the Tarantella.

With "Daughters of Cybele," Alessandra Belloni carries on the tradition of Roman priestesses who played the tambourine in worship of Dionysus, God of ecstasy and wine, and the Earth goddess Cybele.
